It's been five years since Allison Moore's last offering, and in that time, her son, John Henry, has been diagnosed with autism, and her marriage to Steve Earle has run its course. Down to Believing tackles these tough subjects in Moorer's frank fashion. The blistering, bluesy "Mama Let the Wolf In" is an impassioned vent; the helplessness the singer sometimes feels towards her autistic son resonates throughout. "I'm Doing Fine" is an uptempo ditty that, on first blush, sounds like self-affirmation, but as the song continues it becomes somewhat desperate, and slightly unhinged. Moorer's writing is so open and honest that by the time the stunning album closer "Gonna Get It Wrong" comes around, you feel like the shoulder for your new best girlfriend to cry on.
