This score has two main goals that it executes exhaustively: quiet, chamber-arranged cries to score the movie's scenes of private pain, and then steadily-increasing-in-volume percussive fantasias that match the scenes of conflict in Gotham's public sphere. In most cues, there's little variation from the opening motive -- so little that there's a hint of unsophisticated minimalism throughout. "Despair" is the exception, and the highlight: You don't have to be an action-movie fan to think that it's thrilling when the brass overwhelms the chugging rhythms underneath.
