Best of or not, The Herbaliser sound more dated than you might expect from a group that formed only in 1995. Their dusty breaks, lounge keys and snippets of '60s TV dialogue often have the moldy whiff of acid jazz, poorly preserved. But beneath the era's stylistic signature there's evidence of a restless musical talent. "Mr. Chombee Has the Flaw (From Session 2)" is an invigorating 6/8 jazz jam, and the "PC Remix" of the same is a spooky, cat-footed breakbeat prelude; "Song for Mary" sounds like a sprightlier Portishead, neatly flipping noir cliches on their head in a flash of horns.
