Laura Mvula’s acclaimed 2013 debut, Sing to the Moon was a revelation of orchestral swirls and introspective lyrics. On her equally bracing follow-up, she adds harder, modern touches. The feminist anthem “Phenomenal Woman” pushes like an ‘80s New Wave hit, while “Let Me Fall” centers on a memorable synth-pop chorus. She reportedly wrote The Dreaming Room while dealing with the aftereffects of a divorce; one track in particular, “Show Me Love,” plumbs the despair she must have felt. There are numerous allusions to searching for God’s grace, and Mvula’s yearnings lead to egalitarian testaments such as “Bread” and “People,” the latter which includes a cameo from grime rapper Wretch 32. Most impressive, though, are the sonic twists that mark her journey. “Angel” has a country & western stomp and a tempo that seems to change every four bars. “Overcome” builds on a propulsive scratch guitar rhythm from Nile Rodgers, and Mvula’s exhortations to “keep your head up, carry on.”
