True: the Grape never matched its classic debut. Critics, however, were too harsh on the band's subsequent work. The band's sophomore album, 1968's Wow, is a spiritual counterpart to the Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request. It's a psychedelic opus that's so misguided and warped that it makes for a wonderfully surreal listen. "Bitter Sweet," for example, starts off as country soul with what sounds like a church choir before exploding into an avant-garde cacophony. Trippy stuff, indeed.
